- Αν ο Καρκαβίτσας ανήκει στους κλασικούς της νεότερης πεζογραφίας μας, «Ο ζητιάνος» είναι ασφαλώς το κλασικότερο έργο του. Ο ηθογράφος και θαλασσογράφος Καρκαβίτσας των σύντομων διηγημάτων γίνεται εδώ έμπειρος ανατόμος της ανθρώπινης ψυχής. Η περιγραφή του κοινωνικού μικρόκοσμου, με τους ανθρώπους και τους χώρους του, ξετυλίγεται σε ένα από τα δυνατότερα μυθιστορήματα της νεοελληνικής λογοτεχνίας. «Ο ζητιάνος» επαινέθηκε ανεπιφύλακτα τόσο από τους έλληνες κριτικούς όσο και από τους έγκυρους ξένους ελληνιστές.
