- Το βιβλίο αυτό γράφτηκε με αφορμή το δημοψήφισμα της 24ης Απριλίου 2004, που εκτιμάται ως ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά πολιτικά γεγονότα της σύγχρονης κυπριακής ιστορίας. Όσα θέματα αναφέρονται που ανάγονται σε περιόδους πριν και μετά το δημοψήφισμα αποσκοπούν στο να καταδείξουν τη σημασία του. Το ιδιαίτερο σημείο που θέλει να τονίσει το βιβλίο είναι ότι το δημοψήφισμα δεν ήταν ένα μεμονωμένο γεγονός αλλά το αποκορύφωμα ιστορικών εξελίξεων και συντονισμένων διπλωματικών διεργασιών που όριζαν μιαν ευκαιρία επίλυσης του Κυπριακού. Μια κατάλληλη στιγμή, μέσα σε ένα ευμετάβλητο διεθνές περιβάλλον, με συγκεκριμένο χρονοδιάγραμμα και με ημερομηνία λήξης... ... Η απόρριψη της λύσης από μέρους των Ελληνοκυπρίων μετέβαλε τα αισθήματα της διεθνούς κοινής γνώμης και απομάκρυνε το ενδιαφέρον των διεθνών οργανισμών από την Κύπρο. Από την επομένη της 24ης Απριλίου, ο ΟΗΕ και η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση είχαν άλλες προτεραιότητες και άλλα προβλήματα για να ασχοληθούν. Καταβάλλεται έκτοτε μια σαφής προσπάθεια υποβάθμισης της σημασίας του δημοψηφίσματος. Πολιτικοί και δημοσιογράφοι υποστηρίζουν ότι το δημοψήφισμα ανήκει πια στο παρελθόν και δεν πρέπει να μας απασχολεί. Ανεξάρτητα όμως από το τι πιστεύουν οι κύκλοι αυτοί, το δημοψήφισμα θα βρίσκεται στο επίκεντρο του προβληματισμού για οποιαδήποτε μελλοντική εξέλιξη στο Κυπριακό.
- This book was written on the occasion of the referendum of April 24, 2004, which is considered one of the most important political events in modern Cypriot history. All the issues mentioned that go back to periods before and after the referendum are intended to demonstrate its importance. The special point that the book wants to emphasize is that the referendum was not an isolated event but the culmination of historical developments and coordinated diplomatic processes that defined an opportunity to resolve the Cyprus issue. An appropriate moment, in a volatile international environment, with a specific timetable and expiration date ... ... The rejection of the solution by the Greek Cypriots changed the feelings of the international public opinion and diverted the interest of the international organizations from Cyprus. From the day after 24 April, the UN and the European Union had other priorities and other problems to deal with. A clear effort has since been made to downplay the importance of the referendum. Politicians and journalists argue that the referendum is a thing of the past and should not concern us. However, regardless of what these circles believe, the referendum will be at the center of concerns for any future development in the Cyprus issue.
